Hoping for a Root Canal

Once upon a time, I swore that if I ever needed a root canal again, I wouldn't do it unless I was knocked out. My how things change.

Since Saturday, I've been experiencing an electric shock-like pain in the back, right, upper area of my mouth. We're talking bring-me-to-my-knees, make-me-sob pain.

Sunday, B. called the emergency number for the dentist and told them I needed to see someone right away. The answering service people called my dentist, who immediately prescribed Vicodin and an antibiotic, convinced I had an infection.

I went to see him yesterday and am having trouble coming to terms with his new diagnosis - Trigeminal Neuralgia. Believe me, I'd rather have to have a root canal - without anesthetic - than have this.

If the antibiotics don't make a difference by Thursday, my dentist is going to refer me to an oral surgeon and a neurologist. Wish me luck.

My bet is that you have a toothache and not Trigeminal Neuralgia. Have you tried an anti-inflammatory painkiller? Ibuprofen often works as well or better for toothaches as narcotics will (and not loop you out).
