Don't Tell Me a Pet is Not a Child

I never thought I'd be one of those dog owners who treat their dogs like children. I did think owning a dog was similar to having children. After all, it was another being that I was responsible for. After we got Devo, we couldn't just run off for the weekend. We had to make sure he ate and got walked and had his shots. It wasn't just us anymore.

In short, it didn't take long before he became like a child to us. So, Wednesday, when he ran away, sucked.

We took him to Oak Openings for a nice little hike after work, but we weren't even in the park for 5 minutes before he took off after a deer. B. tried to catch him, but Devo only had 'deer' on his mind. Or maybe, 'big, brown animal with white tail.'

We searched for Devo for hours Wednesday night - until it was too dark to see two feet in front of us and we got kicked out of the park. Going home without him was one of the worst things I've ever done.

We both took Thursday off and walked miles and miles and miles of trails looking for him. (Did you know Oak Openings covers 3,744 acres?) But, again, it got too dark to look anymore. Going home without him Thursday was higher on the list of worst things I've ever done.

Let's skip a bunch of crying (sobbing really), bargaining, etc. and jump to ... he was found!!! Devo made friends with a dog who lived about a mile from where we lost him and the dog's owner called us Thursday night.

So, in addition to being therapeutic, the purpose of this post is to tell you to make sure your pet's tags are up-to-date and to get your pet chipped. I never knew how I felt about the chip before, but I now have no doubts.

you almost made me cry at work!!!

i have a confession: i'm a bad doggie mom...we keep the collars (w/ tags) off the dogs because they wake the baby when they shake their heads, etc. but now...the collars are going back on the dogs. i can just imagine one of our dogs jumping our fence and not having the collar on and then we'd lose them forever.

and i would be very, very SAD.
