For Your Listening Pleasure

Have you ever wanted to listen to music, but couldn't decide on what station or which CD to listen to? Did you want to hear something new or something varied from your regular routine, but weren't sure how to find it?

Have I got the answer for you! Two answers actually - Musicovery and Pandora, two fantastic Internet radio stations.

I came across Musicovery while on the BzzAgent Web site and now can't get enough of it. I'm not feeling creative today, so here's the pitch straight from Musicovery:

"Musicovery.com is a revolutionary form of interactive webRadio that allows you to explore styles and epochs down to the exact year based on your mood. Feeling positive, energetic, and amped about 1980s pop? Or maybe you're feeling dark and calm, perhaps more in the mood for some classic 1974 R&B.

However you may be feeling, musicovery.com is the site for you. Not only can you select a particular genre in a given range of years based on your mood, but you can also select music for dancing to based on tempo and danceable beat. Whether you're laying down and chilling out or looking to get your groove on, musicovery.com has what you're looking for from electro to gospel, and classical to rap."

You literally pick your mood, genre and timeframe and Musicovery picks songs for you. For example, I just picked energetic, slightly dark rock from the 90s and got Blur's On Your Own, The Verve's Blue and Sonic Youth's 100%. The list expands as the songs are played or when you click on a particular selection.

Pandora, which I learned about from my friend R., plays music from the Music Genome Project, which analyses music to understand the musical preferences of listeners. You type in an artist or song you like and the site "scans its entire world of analyzed music, almost a century of popular recordings - new and old, well known and completely obscure - to find songs with interesting musical similarities to your choice."

Ingenious, really.

Give 'em a try the next time you don't know what you're in the mood to listen to. Oddly enough, these sites may know you better than you know yourself.
